چکیده

I very briefly discuss the ages and kinematics of spheroids as well as the black hole relations, via a few recent and illustrative studies, which include results on the downsizing, scaling laws, angular momentum and central massive objects.

The black hole mass distribution in early-type galaxies: cusps in HST photometry interpreted through adiabatic black hole growth

HST observations show that the surface brightness profiles of early-type galaxies have central cusps, I ∝ r−γ. Two characteristic profile types are observed: ‘core’ profiles have a break at a resolved radius and γ ≤ 0.3 inside that radius; ‘power-law’ profiles have no clear break and γ > 0.3. With few exceptions, galaxies with MV < −22 have core profiles, and galaxies with MV > −20.5 have power...

J un 2 00 7 A feedback compression star formation model and the black hole - bulge relations

We present a ”feedback compression” model to describe the galactic spheroid formation and its relation with the central nuclear activity. We suggest that the star formation itself can serve as the ”positive feedback” in some extremely dense region to trigger the starburst. The star formation rate as well as the related stellar feedback-induced turbulence will be maximized under the regulation o...

The Mass Budget of Merging Quasars

Two spectacular results emerging from recent studies of nearby dead quasars and distant active quasars are (i) the existence of tight relations between the masses of black holes (BHs) and the properties of their host galaxies (spheroid luminosity or velocity dispersion, galaxy mass), and (ii) a consistency between the local mass density in BHs and that expected by summing up the light received ...

Black Hole Mass Estimates from Reverberation Mapping and from Spatially Resolved Kinematics

Black hole (BH) masses that have been measured by reverberation mapping in active galaxies fall significantly below the correlation between bulge luminosity and BH mass determined from spatially resolved kinematics of nearby normal galaxies. This discrepancy has created concern that one or both techniques suffer from systematic errors. We show that BH masses from reverberation mapping are consi...

A Fundamental Plane Relation for Black Hole Masses and Their Redshift Evolution

We study the relation between black hole (BH) mass and host galaxy properties in simulations of major galaxy mergers, including the effects of gas dissipation, cooling, star formation, and BH accretion and feedback. We show that the simulations predict the existence of a BH “fundamental plane” (BHFP), of the form MBH ∝ σ3.0 R0.5 e or MBH ∝ M0.64±0.1 ∗ σ1.7±0.2, analogous to the FP of elliptical...
